Newsletter Submission Deadline - March 23, 2014
The first newsletter of 2014 is now in the works and a lot is set to happen between now and the proposed April 13 distribution date. This issue will be the first ever combined newsletter for OYM and CJUC. We will know the answer to whether our congregations are amalgamating or not. If you have anything you would like to contribute to this very special issue please give it to T Takasaki.
MONDAY, APRIL 7 @ 1 pm - Bridge Group meets the first Monday of the month in the narthex. Everyone is welcome.
Lenten Calendar Offering
This year our Lenten offering will go to support “Gifts With Vision” from the United Church. The projects we will be supporting are: providing food for a child for a school year in the Philippines ($30.00), providing shoes for a homeless person in Ottawa ($30.00), digging a well for a community in Nicaragua ($150.00), buying uniform and school supplies for a child in Haiti ($45.00), and buying a goat for a community in Zimbabwe ($30.00). Please pick up your calendar today and remember to bring back your offering on Easter Sunday. Thank you for your support!
Barnabas Breakfast Club
WEDNESDAYS - We welcome the volunteers and clergy from St John’s York Mills Anglican Church “Barnabas Breakfast Club”. They will use our facilities to host a monthly community outreach breakfast while major renovations of their property are completed. The program attracts about 25 people who frequently use food banks. Volunteers from St John’s York Mills provide the participants with a hot breakfast, snacks to take away, tokens, time with their clergy, and a time of fellowship. We have donated the use of the kitchen and Fellowship Hall for this community outreach program. They expect to complete their renovations and return to their church this summer. Both the participants and volunteers are grateful for our generous support.
We are pleased to announce that a new elevator will be installed in either May or June of 2014. This replacement is an upgrade to a self automated elevator that can carry a number of people on each trip. The cost of the elevator is $70,000.00 which includes modifications to the existing hoist, installation and licensing. OYM has set aside $35,000.00 for the project. The elevator will be a benefit to both congregations so we are inviting anyone to make a special donation. You can donate using envelopes or pledge cards found in the narthex or include a gift in your offering envelope and mark it “Elevator”. We will report weekly the amount received. Thank you for considering this important project.
Special 60th Anniversary
SUNDAY, APRIL 6 - Centennial-Japanese United Church, in 1954 known as Toronto Japanese United Church Nisei Congregation, then led by Rev. K. Shimizu, celebrates its 60th anniversary on Sunday April 6, 2014. Please invite family and friends to attend the anniversary service to remember the events of that inaugural day. Please join for the singing of timely hymns and stories from church members about that era.
The Exploration Team
The Exploration Team from OYM and CJUC has been exploring the possibility of amalgamating with each other since April. They are now planning to bring a recommendation to the Annual Meetings of each congregation in the New Year. CJUC will be on February 23, 2014 and OYM on March 2, 2014.
If you would like to vote on the issue of amalgamation, you must be a Member of either congregation in accordance with the United Church Manual. If you are unsure of your membership status, CJUC people can speak to H Kagawa and OYM people can speak to J Bennett.
If you would like to affirm your faith and become a member, please speak to Rev. Cindy who would be willing to hold Affirmation of Faith/Confirmation classes in January.
The choir practices Thursdays at 7:30 pm in the sanctuary. Anyone who enjoys singing is welcome to attend.
We are collecting used postage stamps for The Leprosy Mission Canada. They prefer that the stamps are cut from the envelopes leaving about a ¼ inch paper border. The stamps donated are sold by the Mission to dealers, and money raised is used to supply medicine, care and rehabilitation to people suffering from leprosy. The stamps can be left in the STAMP BOX in the church office or given to Marion Felker.
